TY - CHAP M1 - Book, Section TI - Cancer, Lung A1 - Goodman, Catherine A1 - Helgeson, Kevin PY - 2011 T2 - Exercise Prescription for Medical Conditions: Handbook for Physical Therapists AB - This condition includes many different types of tumors, with non-small cell lung cancer the most common type. Lung cancer is a leading cause of preventable death in the United States because smoking and environmental exposure are the primary risk factors. The risk of metastasis is high with these tumors due to the rich supply of lymphatic and blood vessels in the lungs. Treatment is usually a bout of radiation or chemotherapy, followed by surgical excision of the tumor. Clients become deconditioned due to the disease process and treatment programs that produce persistent fatigue and decreased tolerance to physical activities.
