TY - CHAP M1 - Book, Section TI - Posture A1 - Norkin, Cynthia C. A2 - Levangie, Pamela K. A2 - Norkin, Cynthia C. PY - 2011 T2 - Joint Structure and Function: A Comprehensive Analysis, 5e AB - In this chapter, the focus is on how the various body structures are integrated into a system that enables the body as a whole to maintain a particular posture. We will use our knowledge of individual joint and muscle structure and function as the basis for determining how each structure contributes to the equilibrium and stability of the body in the optimal standing posture We will consider the internal and external forces acting on the body in relation to standing, sitting, and lying postures, and we will explore how these forces will affect the patient in Patient Case 13-1. Throughout the chapter, we will include discussions, in the form of Case Applications, related to our patient's ability to function without many of the normal postural control mechanisms and the internal lower extremity forces necessary to maintain his body in the standing posture, as well as potential problems that he might have in the sitting and lying postures.
