Ideally,  surgery  is  preceded  by  a  comprehensive  examination  and  evaluation  of  a  patient's  impairments  and  functional  status  coupled  with  preoperative  patient  education  and  followed  by  a  planned  course  of  postoperative  rehabilitation.
