AB  - Accommodative  foot  orthoses  Soft  or  semirigid  orthoses  designed  to  have  little  effect  on  foot  function  while  providing  protection  or  relief  to  particular  painful  or  pressure  sensitive  areas  or  structures  of  the  foot.Adjustable  positioning  orthotic  joints  Movable  single-axis  hip  joints  with  additional  componentry  that  allows  the  orthotist  to  position  the  thigh  in  positions  other  than  frontal  and  transverse  plane  neutral.Alignment  stability  Stance  phase  knee  extension  stability  created  by  aligning  the  prosthetic  or  orthotic  knee  joint  posterior  to  the  gravity  line  or  ground  reaction  force  vector.Amputation  The  surgical  removal  of  a  limb  or  body  part.  In  this  text,  the  term  is  used  to  refer  to  the  removal  or  absence  of  a  limb.Anchoring  (in  clinical  reasoning)  A  cognitive  error  in  the  diagnostic  process;  locking  into  a  particular  diagnosis  too  early  and  failing  to  properly  consider  other  plausible  alternatives.Angulation  osteotomy  A  surgical  procedure  for  a  medium  or  long  residual  humerus  where  the  distal  part  of  the  bone  is  angled  and  pinned  in  place  to  provide  an  area  for  socket  suspension.Ankle  disarticulation  Amputation  through  the  ankle.  May  also  be  known  as  a  Symes  amputation.Assist  An  orthotic  component  or  design  that  produces  a  force  to  aid  a  designated  joint  motion.  For  example,  a  dorsiflexion  assist  is  an  orthotic  component  or  design  that  provides  a  force  to  aid  dorsiflexion.Autograft  Tissue  transplanted  from  one  part  of  the  body  to  another  in  the  same  individual.Biomechanical  analysis  The  process  of  methodical  observation  of  a  client  performing  an  activity,  breaking  it  into  component  parts,  comparing  the  movements  in  each  component  to  typical  or  effective  movement,  and  identifying  the  impairments  or  abnormalities  that  may  limit  or  restrict  the  individual's  ability  to  perform  the  activity.Bivalved  An  orthosis  or  cast  that  is  cut  into  halves,  usually  resulting  in  a  front  and  a  back  component,  with  openings  on  the  sides.Blucher  An  oxford  shoe  throat  style  in  which  the  vamp  (the  upper)  and  tongue  are  made  from  one  piece  of  material  and  the  quarters  lap  over  the  vamp  and  are  free  distally.  This  style  is  preferred  for  use  with  most  orthoses  because  it  provides  greater  adjustability  and  is  generally  easier  to  don  and  doff.Body  image  Each  individual's  concept  of  his  or  her  own  body  as  an  object  in  and  bound  by  space  independently  and  apart  from  all  other  objects.Body  jacket  A  total  contact  molded  plastic  trunk  orthosis,  which  may  be  trimmed  as  a  lumbosacral  (LSO)  or  a  thoracolumbosacral  (TLSO)  orthosis.Body  powered  A  prosthesis  in  which  the  force  for  operating  the  prosthetic  components  comes  from  a  motion  of  the  body.Body  sock  A  garment  like  a  tightly  fitting  T-shirt  that  is  specially  made  to  fit  under  spinal  orthoses  to  protect  the  skin.Bulbous  A  term  to  describe  the  shape  of  a  residual  limb  that  has  a  rounded  distal  end  that  is  larger  than  the  proximal  part.Cauterization  Destruction  of  tissue  by  burning  or  freezing;  burning  was  used  to  close  wounds  in  early  days.Charcot-Marie-Tooth  disease  A  hereditary  motor  and  sensory  peripheral  neuropathy  that  primarily  affects  the  lower  leg  muscles,  resulting  in  gait  abnormalities  and  foot  deformities.Charcot  neuroarthropathy  A  progressive  and  destructive  condition  that  ...
