The eighth edition of O’Sullivan and Schmitz’s Physical Rehabilitation is dedicated to Dr. Susan O’Sullivan and Dr. Tom Schmitz. As faculty members at Boston University in the mid-1970s, Susan and Tom saw a need for a textbook that covered the breadth of adult rehabilitation. At the time, there were no textbooks dedicated to physical therapy. First published in 1980, Physical Rehabilitation was one of the first, if not the first, textbook that was written by and for physical therapists. Through their continued efforts, in concert with the outstanding authors who have contributed to the book, Physical Rehabilitation has facilitated physical therapy student and physical therapist assistant student learning for over 40 years. Susan and Tom’s excellence is supported by the fact that Physical Rehabilitation is consistently among the most widely used textbooks in physical therapy and physical therapist assistant education. The impact Susan and Tom have had on physical therapy education and practice through this book is immeasurable. The profession of physical therapy is indebted to Susan and Tom.
