  • Adderall, Adderall XR (amphetaminedextroamphetamine)

Stimulant used to improve attention, decrease symptoms of ADHD, approved for children >3 yr, long-acting form works 8–12 hr Abdominal pain, vomiting, weight loss, decreased appetite, HA, insomnia, nasal congestion, irritability; may increase BP Do not use with heart disease, HTN, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, anxiety/tension/agitation, Tourette syndrome, hx of drug abuse, hx of seizures, taking MAOIs; with skin patch could cause irritation at application site
  • Advair (fluticasone) [breath-activated; may be difficult for young children]

Corticosteroid and bronchodilator; used for maintenance of asthma signs and symptoms; for frequent asthma symptoms, attacks, and use of rescue medicines URT infections, throat irritation, ENT infections, nosebleeds, sinusitis, HA, GI discomfort and pain, N & V, candidiasis of the mouth or throat, fever, chest symptoms Recent exposure to chickenpox, DM, heart disease, HTN, infection, liver disease, immune system disorders, overactive thyroid, seizure disorder, allergic reaction to steroids
  • Allegra (fexofenadine hydrochloride) [tablets and oral suspension]

Antihistamine, for seasonal allergic rhinitis/hay fever, for children >6 yr old Colds or flu, coughing, drowsiness, fatigue, fever, HA, indigestion, menstrual problems, nausea, pain including back or ear pain HTN, diabetes, heart disease, increased ocular pressure, prostate problems, hyperthyroidism; should not combine with erythromycin or ketoconazole; do not use within 2 wk of taking MAOI
  • Amoxil (amoxicillin; capsules) [chewables, oral suspension]

Antibiotic; used for bacterial infections including otitis media, UTI, pneumonia, E. coli N & V, diarrhea, pseudomembranous colitis, tooth discoloration, hepatitis, crystalluria, anemia, reversible hyperactivity, agitation, anxiety, insomnia, confusion, convulsions, behavioral changes, dizziness Liver and kidney disease, asthma, bleeding disorder, mononucleosis; do not use if allergic to penicillin
  • Ativan (lorazepam)

Benzodiazepine, used in management of anxiety and in seizure/epilepsy Dizziness, sleepiness, weakness, feeling unsteady, N & V, visual disturbance, insomnia, forgetfulness, change in appetite, skin rash Caution with hx of depression or thoughts of suicide; hx of liver, kidney, or respiratory dysfunction; hx of alcohol abuse
  • Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium)

Antibiotic; for bacterial infections including sinusitis, pneumonia, ear infections, bronchitis, UTI, skin infections Mild diarrhea, gas, stomach pain, N & V, HA, skin rash or itching, white patches in mouth or throat, yeast infection Liver and kidney disease, asthma, mononucleosis; call HCP with severe diarrhea or diarrhea that lasts >3 days, nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice
  • Botox (botulinum toxin A) [injection]

Blocks neurotransmitter transmission, inhibits acetylcholine; reduces spasticity by temporary weakening of muscle HA, dizziness or drowsiness, soreness at injection site, nausea Seek immediate attention with allergic reaction, difficulty breathing, talking, swallowing, unusual or excessive weakness, chest pain, irregular heartbeat
  • Claritin (loratadine) [OTC chewables and syrup]/Clarinex (desloratadine, isomer form) [Rx only, for children >12 yr]
