Part I: Exercise Physiology: Introduction

This part of this textbook is designed to give you an appreciation of the field of exercise physiology as a discipline. Chapter 1 provides a brief historical perspective of the field of exercise physiology so you will understand the relevance of the profession within the context of health professions. It is also intended to give you a foundational understanding of how the field of exercise physiology fits into the "real world" and how it can impact consumers. Chapter 2 defines the differences and interrelationships among physical activity, fitness, and health. The focus is on how physical activity and exercise impact the risk for development of chronic diseases, as well as quality of life and longevity.
