eyeball

(ī′hal″) The globe of the eye. Tension and position of the globe in relation to the orbit should be noted.

 PATHOLOGY: Pathological conditions include enophthalmos (recession of the eyeball) and exophthalmos (protrusion of the eyeball).

eyebright

(ī′brīt″) A small flowering herb of the genus Euphrasia, used in folk medicine to treat low vision and depression.

(ī′hrow″) The arch over the eye and its covering, esp. the hairs.

eyecup

(ī′kūp″) 1. The optic vesicle, an evagination of the embryonic brain from which the retina develops. 2. A small cup that fits over the eye, used for bathing its surface.

eyedrops

(ī′drops″) Any medicinal substance dropped in liquid form onto the conjunctiva.

 In applying eyedrops, the head should be held back because the drops will not pass from under the upper lid to under the lower lid or vice versa. The smaller the eyedrops, the better. Too much liquid in the eye causes the patient to blink, and the medication is then washed away by the increased lacrimal secretion.

image Many medicines are not absorbed from the conjunctiva because they may be readily absorbed from the nasolacrimal duct. For this reason, esp. in children, it is advisable to close off the duct by applying pressure to the inner canthus of the eye for a few minutes after each instillation.

eyeglass

(ī′glas″) A glass lens used to correct a defect in visual acuity or to prevent exposure to bright light if the lens is tinted. SEE: glasses.

eyeground

(ī′grownd″) The fundus of the eye as seen with an ophthalmoscope.

eye-hand coordination

(ī′hand′) The ability to identify objects by sight and touch, and to grasp, push, pull, or direct their movement with the hand. Hand-eye coordination is the ability of the vision system to coordinate the information received through the eyes to control, guide, and direct the hands in the accomplishment of a given task, such as handwriting or catching a ball.
