esophageal tube

esophagectasia, esophagectasis

(ĕ-sŏf″ă-jĕk-tā′sē-ă, ē-sŏf″ă-jĕk′tă-sĭs) [″ + ektasis, distention] Dilatation of the esophagus.

esophagectomy

(ē-sŏf″ă-jĕk′tō-mē) [″ + ektome, excision] Surgical removal of all or a portion of the esophagus.

esophagismus

(ē-sŏf-ă-jĭs′mŭs) [″ + -ismos, condition] Spasm of the esophagus.

esophagitis

(ē′sof-ă-jīt′ĭs) [esophago- + -itis] Inflammation of the esophagus. SEE: acid reflux test.

eosinophilic e. ABBR: EoE. Dysphagia and heartburn resulting from allergy to inhaled or consumed antigens. Biopsies of the esophagus reveals infiltration of the mucosa by eosinophils. It is treated with corticosteroids.

medication-induced e. Pill-induced e.

necrotizing e. Severe injury to the cells that line the esophagus, with cellular death and eventual desquamation. SYN: acute esophageal necrosis; black esophagus.

pill-induced e. Inflammation of the esophageal mucosa by caustic medications, e.g., bisphosphonates, tetracyclines, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. SYN: medication-induced esophagitis.

reflux e. SEE: gastroesophageal reflux; reflux disease.

esophagogastrectomy

(ĕ-sŏf″ă-gō-găs-trĕk′tō-mē) [″ + gaster, belly, + ektome, excision] Surgical removal of all or part of the stomach and esophagus.

esophagogastroanastomosis

(ĕ-sŏf″ă-gō-găs″trō-ă-năs″tō-mō′sĭs) [″ + ″ + anastomosis, opening] A joining of the esophagus to the stomach.

esophagogastroduodenoscopy, esophagealgastroduodenoscopy

(ē-sof″ă-gō-gas″trō-doo″ŏ-dē-nos′kŏ-pē, -dū″ŏ, ē-sof″ă-jē″ăl-gas″trō-doo″ŏ-dē-nos′kŏ-pē, -dū″ŏ) [esophago- + gastroduodenoscopy] ABBR: EGD. Examination of the upper gastrointestinal tract with a flexible fiber-optic endoscope. EGD is often performed to identify the cause of or to treat bleeding, pain, or difficulty with swallowing.

esophagogastroscopy

(ē-sŏf″ă-gō-găs-trŏs′kă-pē) [″ + ″ + ″] Inspection of the esophagus and stomach with an endoscope.

(ē-sŏf″ă-gō-găs-trŏs′tō-mē) [″ + ″ + stoma, mouth] Formation of an opening or anastomosis between the esophagus and stomach.
