Auerbach plexus

(ow′ĕr-boks″) [Leopold Auerbach, Ger. anatomist, 1828–1897] Myenteric plexus.

Auer bodies

(ow′ĕr) [John Auer, U.S. physician, 1875–1948] Rod-shaped structures, present in the cytoplasm of myeloblasts, myelocytes, and monoblasts, found in leukemia. Also called Auer rods.

augmentation

(og″mĕn-tā′shŏn) [L. augmentare, to increase, grow] 1. The act of adding to or increasing the shape, size, function, or strength of something. 2. In obstetrics, the use of pharmacological or surgical interventions to help the progression of a previously dysfunctional labor. SYN: augmentation of labor.

bladder a. Surgical enlargement of the urinary bladder with a segment of bowel. The technique enlarges the reservoir of the bladder and enhances the compliance of the detrusor muscles. It is used esp. in patients with neurogenic bladder problems refractory to medical therapy. When a major portion of the bladder is resected (due to a malignancy), an isolated intestinal pouch is used as a substitute for the bladder (neoenterocystoplasty). SYN: enterocystoplasty.

localized alveolar ridge a. Dental surgery to repair defects in the jaw due to the extraction or loss of a tooth. A bone graft is placed into the socket formed at the base of the extracted tooth. Alternatives to a bone graft include a soft-tissue graft or bone substitutes. The surrounding gum is sutured in place to cover the graft. The grafted bone can repair aesthetic defects or be used as a foundation for dental implants. Results generally include an increase in the width and/or height of the alveolar ridge. SYN: ridge augmentation; socket grafting.

percutaneous vertebral a. ABBR: PVA. Any surgical treatment for spinal fractures that corrects the defect produced by the fracture, e.g., kyphoplasty or vertebroplasty.

ridge a. Localized alveolar ridge a.

sinus a. Oral surgery to replace lost bone in the maxilla. It can be used to prepare the maxilla for dental implants, or to repair congenital oral defects. SYN: sinus lift.

augmented intelligence

A form of artificial intelligence in which the objective is to enhance human cognitive function, rather than to replace it.
