Indications: Management of dementia

Effect: ↑ Amount of acetylcholine in CNS (inhibits cholinesterase); temperature ↑ cognitive function & QOL

Common side effects: Fatigue, dizziness, HA, diarrhea, nausea, incontinence, tremor, arthritis, muscle cramps

Contraind: Hypersensitivity

Use cautiously: W/hepatic reaction

Indications: Prevention & treatment of anemias

Effect: RBC & Hb production

Common side effects:

1. Oral Fe ↓ absorption of tetracyclines

2. Vit E ↓ response to Fe

3. Phenytoin (anticonvulsant) ↓ absorption of folic acid

4. Darbepoetin & epoetin may ↑ heparin need in hemodialysis

Other side effects: Dizziness, HA, nausea, vomiting

Contraind: All are contraind in undiagnosed anemias, uncontrolled HTN, hemolytic anemias

Use cautiously: Use parenteral iron cautiously in patient/clients w/hypersensitive reactions or allergies

Effect: Dilate coronary arteries; cause systemic vasodilation

Ca+ Channel Blockers Amlodipine (Norvasc) Bepridil (Vascor) Diltiazem (Cardizem) Verapamil (Calan, Isoptin)

Common side effects: Nitrates cause headaches; need to develop tolerance

Ca+ Channel Blockers & Beta Blockers Indications: Long-term management of angina

Effect: Beta blockers

↓ Myocardial O2 consumption: ↓ HR

Ca+ Channel Blockers

Smooth muscle arterial relaxation (systemic)

Common side effects: Hypotension/dizziness, particularly w/position changes (orthostatic hypotension)

Contraind/cautions: Beta blockers & Ca+ channel blockers: contraind in advanced heart block, cardiogenic shock, & uncomp heart failure
