Part II: Fueling Physical Activity: Introduction

This section of the textbook presents information relevant to providing energy for physical activity and exercise. Chapter 3 focuses specifically on the macronutrients and micronutrients in the diet, and their specific roles within the body. Chapter 4 then details the specific energy pathways that provide the energy to perform physical work. A major focus is on the interplay between the anaerobic and aerobic pathways, and how they seamlessly interact to supply energy when the body is at rest all the way up to maximal exertion. Chapter 5 introduces the concept of energy balance (i.e., the balance between caloric intake vs. caloric expenditure) and how that impacts weight management.
