Engaged professionalism involves the thoughtful and purposeful use of our knowledge, skills, and interactions in order to effect change. As physical therapists, we have both the privilege and the responsibility to make a transformative impact on our patients, our profession, and society at large. Instrumental communication pertains to the skills that facilitate these outcomes.

Because change is best effected in an atmosphere of cooperation, Chapter 11 explores approaches to facilitating consensus, which include assertiveness and negotiation. Chapter 12 explores the concept of transformational teaching—the sharing of information in formal and informal situations as well as in the context of patient education.
