Introduction

Part 1 introduces the building blocks of effective communication and professionalism, which are explored in subsequent chapters. A primary purpose of Chapter 1 is to provide evidence suggesting that continuous social change demands the ongoing development of communication skills. In addition, active learning strategies that will be used throughout the text are presented and described. In Chapter 2, the concept of engagement is presented as the application of effective communication skills to professionalism and work satisfaction. Chapter 3 explores specific elements associated with the choice of an optimal line of work, presenting a spectrum of three domains (job, career, and mission) that direct attitudes and values.
