Engaged professionalism involves the thoughtful and purposeful use of our knowledge, skills, and interactions in order to effect change. As physical therapists, we have both the privilege and the responsibility to make a transformative impact on our patients, our profession, and society at large. Instrumental communication pertains to the skills that facilitate these outcomes.

Chapter 12 explores the concept of transformational teaching—the sharing of information in formal and informal situations as well as in the context of patient education.
